Tunnel Snakes Log: Thurs, May 18, 2017

After the road to Murk battle, we ask the last gnoll about the missing obelisks but he says nothing so Mags baps him and he dies. We take a short rest and continue on the trail.

Up ahead, Mags spots a white horse running away from something. Mags can see that there is a harness on the horse and it appears to have snapped.

We see a group of travellers up ahead that look troubled. Simone keeps watch for gnolls while the rest of us go up to the travellers. Secutus convinces a girl with a crossbow to approach them to help her father who got bit by a snake, which also spooked their horse. Secutus discovers royalweed will cure his poisoned wound so Murrdyn and Torthen decide to look for some while Mags and Hannya look for their escaped horse. Simone keeps an eye out for gnolls while Secutus stays with the father.

Hannya and Mags reach the horse and calm him down, but at the same time Simone sees gnolls coming up behind them. She warns the party and goes up to meet Mags and Hannya, then communicates to the horse to return to the cart and his owners. Hannya and Mags hide up a tree in hopes of jumping down from above on the gnolls but they end up going another direction towards the rest of the party, and then change their mind once they see that the party is grouping back together. They retreat.

The party discovers the traveller’s name is Tuck. He recommends searching for Golda the Healer when they reach Murk. She could probably put them up for the night. The party says its goodbyes to Tuck and his daughters, and part ways.

We approach Murk where guards are awaiting at the entrance of the town. The road passes under a large carved stone overhang (about 20’ high and 40’ wide). The structure’s silhouette  looks like a giant boot. A noble’s house banner adorns the entrance. It’s green with a white sword in an anvil. A chain crosses the entrance and armored guards control who comes in and who goes out.

Secutus gets close and tries to gain passage. The guards announce that the town is now called Schmidttsburg instead of Murk and they have to pay a toll to enter. They search us while asking us why we are in town. We say we’re looking for work. As Secutus pays the toll, the guard gets ballsy and asks for a gold instead of 2 copper. Torthen and Hannya refuse to pay, Secutus and Simone pay but she warns Secutus that he owes her since it was his words that made the guard ask for more gold. But Secutus convinces the guard to be happy with the 2 gold they got so they let them through.

They see a want board so the party goes to read it. They see 3 posters: One for Nathan Tull, one for Skillara and one for Artio, a capra.

We continue into town and see a very sad town with hungry people. At the end of the ridge are the mines. Torthen talks to a townslady to get information for the lady they’re looking for. As the party goes through town, they reach a little town center with an inn. Beyond the inn are some ruins.

Inside the inn, Mags senses something isn’t right and sees a few suspicious characters signaling each other in Thieves Cant. Just as she lets the party members know, a booming sound comes from outside. Everyone goes out to see what happens. A plume of white dust envelopes the mine entrance as people yell, “Another cave-in! Help!”

People rush to help. The party almost take off to help in a rescue attempt but something catches their eye. High above them is an airship making a commotion. All of a sudden, a figure dives off the airship. As the figure gets closer to the ground, its arms expand and the unmistakable wings of an Avi catch the wind and the person glides towards the ruins beyond the little town center.

Written as a snarky British narrator who harbors a strong dislike of our characters

When we last saw our, ahem, beloved Tunnel Snakes, they were struggling to assert control over the remaining ghouls. A task as simple as placing a collar around the neck of the offending species. Alas, I suppose they were doing their very best.

The goat-like Hannya and bad-facial-haired Murrdyn attempted to grapple the ghoul called Rasp with questionable accessories (a noose necklace… NooslaceTM). And they spectacularly failed. Though, to be fair, he was riddled with nails and their dainty flesh was no match for a few bits of pointed metal. While Hannya took control of Rasp by his Nooslace, Murrdyn, the wizard who favors knowledge above all, demonstrated his skills were not heavily reliant on his physical strength or deftness of movement by, once again, failing to collar the crafty ghoul and causing Hannya to lose control of the Nooslace.

Secutus, having had his human buttocks punctured by the ingenious devices referred to as Malazan Spheres, proceeded to destroy the marveling technology in one cretinous blow.

After accomplishing the daunting task of incapacitating a child, one which Simone, the insufferable cat woman, found too strenuous, Maghahn, the bird-like woman (insert insult) managed to persuade a mob of intoxicated yokels to turn to leave. I’m sure to feel impressed by this at some point.

Simone left with the weakened child. After witnessing an unknown man to the North, she fled to the cover of the trees, like a true hero.

Meanwhile, Secutus finding himself under a timid Duck Owl, discharges his weapon at it and impales its beak. All the commotion drew the attention of Torthen, a walking dwarf prototype, transformed into a panther. How appropriate, turning into a beast that crawls to fight a beast that flies. But one cannot expect too much intelligence from this dwarf.

As Torthen explored the graveyard in his panther state, he made his way toward the mausoleum and found a secret tunnel. He traveled through the tunnel and found himself in the presence of two ghouls.

In an uncharacteristically serendipitous move, Mags also traveled through the grate and made it into the tunnels in time to help Torthen as the ghouls rightly defended themselves from their intruders.

As the two Tunnel Snakes did battle in the actual tunnel, Murrdyn, the ever brilliant wizard, cast a ray of frost on Rasp. What a shame he missed and made the river icy.

Thankfully, Hannya was able to redeem him, and herself in the process, by jumping into the icy river, swimming up to Rasp and collaring him. Though to be fair, Murrdyn actually had to use his divination for her to know which way the ghoul would have dodged. So I guess she wasn’t really all that special, actually.

During the embarrassing struggles Murrdyn and Hannya were having, Simone continued to carry the child in hiding, like a coward from a harmless farm dog.

The Ghoul Chase Continues:

Hannya continued guiding her ghoul towards the magic stones as baddies from the north began to appear. When the ghoul entered the perimeter, his eyes glazed over and his body pressed against one of the stones like a magnet. Hannya removed his collar and began moving south towards the bridge. She met up with Torthen and took the balloon lady ghoul back to the stones, where Hannya was able to get the collar off and now has two.

Torthen returned to the farmer’s huts and sneaked around there until a ghoul popped out and surprise attacked him. Seeing Murrdyn attempting to reach his comrade, the ghoul booked it towards the bridge but found Hannya blocking the way, ready to take him on. But he took the watery route and submerged himself under the river, trying to cross and stopping to give Hannya the middle finger. But she was having none of that so she hopped back the way she came and from the shoreline, successfully jumped the waters to a rock where she saw a loose noose popping up out of the water that happened to still be around the ghoul’s neck. So she reached for it and pulled the ghoul out of the water in hopes of her and Murrdyn, who was now nearby, collaring the bastard and taking him to the stones.

Simone meanwhile was trying to capture a little boy ghoul named Billy but he was living up to his reputation of being a little shit and difficult to find.

Maghahn had just found a grate among the bushy terrain to the west. Sensing that it was important to keep anything from escaping through it, she wedged something into the grate, disabling it to open. She then came up to a mob trying to attack a grave robber thinking he was a ghoul. Mags convinced the mob she was part of a team there to help capture the ghouls and barked commands in an authoritative and convincing way to the mob in hopes of getting them out of the way for a short time while she searched for ghouls on her own. The mob agreed and headed back south as she commanded.

Just then, Billy and his orb found her. The orb was able to give her a prick to the bottom, which she did not appreciate. Simone came upon the scene and took out the orb. Then, the two ladies tried to wrangle the little Billy shit again, but he kept outmaneuvering them until Mags had had enough and hit him with a sneak attack that knocked him out cold.

Secutus meanwhile was scouting the area near the wheat AND corn fields, searching for ghouls and keeping an eye on Simone while she looked for Billy. While doing this, he confronted another mob in hopes of getting them off Simone and Billy’s tail. He convinced them he was part of a team of experts that were handling the situation and the mob retreated.

Some buzzing sounds caught his attention so he headed back towards the fields to investigate, finding a Malazon Orb, which then attacked him and is currently drilling into his BODEH!

TUNE IN NEXT TIME FOR THE (hopefully) EXCITING CONCLUSION OF…. BIG MEGA MAP OF GHOULS AND DRILLY METAL BALLS ADVENTURE!

Last time on Tunnel Snakes Z

The newly updated roster of the Tunnel Snakes set out to apprehend 6 ghouls at Shelby Farms and the surrounding countryside, who were currently hunted by angry mobs from the South, sought by mysterious forces of Malazahn from tower Arnor to the North, and guided by semi-sentient spheres deployed to bring them to Arnor.

Quickly the group sprung out of the camp to take position at the sight of torchlight from the south, while Murrdyn set a hex upon Friar Skilera, sensing that he would not be able to resist. A suggestion was placed upon the Friar that he aid the Tunnel Snakes in capturing the ghouls, after which he was released from his bonds. Torthen transformed into a giant wolf spider, surprising Secutus, and set out for the bushes north of the river.

Torthen ran into some wolf traps in the bushes but managed to dodge their grasp. Secutus climbed the embankment to the south to keep a lookout on the hovels built there, but quickly saw movement in the corn fields and moved west to notify the team. Murrdyn had moved further west, and taken up a position inside a dilapidated wooden shack, using his owl Screechly as his eyes and ears to survey the field. The Friar, compelled by Murrdyn’s ensorcelment, approached the field to apprehend the suspected ghoul.

While all of this was happening South of the river, Hannya rushed up the North bank with Maghahn and the tentatively named Simone shortly behind, however they quickly noticed creatures lurking near the bank in the bushes and moved North to avoid them. Taking a circuitous path back to the bank of the river, they avoided that obstacle but found a wild boar soon charging from the west – apparently they had strayed too close. Hannya took the brunt of a blow from this porcine aggressor, while Maghahn quickly retaliated, dispatching it with a sneak attack from Hannya’s side after which Hannya immediately licked her lips at the thought of bacon for dinner. Simone came to the North bank and pounced across with feline agility, now finding herself just north of a small cemetery on the South side of the river.

Back to the South, Torthen moved along the cliffside abutting the river to avoid further traps, finding himself positioned to the North East of the cemetery, and spotted a complication – several grave robbers at work, and one skulking about the southern cemetery wall fearfully fingering the trigger on his crossbow – pointed at the Friar! The ne’erdowell unleashed a bolt at the Friar, which thankfully missed, and Torthen snuck up behind the robber in his spidery form, unleashing a brutal bite and incapacitating poison that set in within seconds, rendering the grave robber unconscious. One threat down, two to go. The Friar’s misfortune was only amplifying however, as from the field to his South a floating metal orb the size of a large fist launched itself right for his face!

The Friar recoiled in terror as this device latched itself to him, and began deploying a diabolical drill with which to pierce his skull, wounding him! Murrdyn began unleashing bolts of frost to defend the Friar as Eugene stayed close by, meanwhile Secutus and Torthen moved to the east of the corn field to apprehend the ghoul that was following the floating sphere. A few moments later and the sphere was frozen by the Wizard’s magic and the strugglings of the Friar who opened up its shell with a dagger strike, sparing the him a horrible death.

The ghoul emerged from the fields, revealing itself as a female adult, bouncing lightly and carrying a living baby. As the ghoul tried to flee, Secutus stopped the ghoul in its tracks with a precise but controlled gut-blow, a painful but non lethal strike, avoiding the baby. The ghoul tried to flee again as Torthen attempted to grapple with it and place a collar upon it, but it evaded him and prompted another strike from Secutus, nearly knocking the ghoul unconcious. Secutus and Torthen worked together to grapple the ghoul before it could attempt to flee again, successfully collaring it.

As the baby was removed from its grasp, the ghoul began to float! Torthen quickly spun a strand of silk, and tied it to the ghoul to keep it from going to the sky. Secutus snatched up the baby and located a man in the field who had been following the risen woman, the apparent father of the baby and widower of the ghoul that snatched the child up. Secutus handed the child to this man, and implored him to flee South away from danger, and said he would take care of the man’s departed wife. The man took this news and his child, and left with thanks.

On the North side of the river, Maghahn had skillfully disarmed a trap by the tried and true foot-first method, and repositioned and re-armed it for her own purposes. Joined by Hannya they spotted an armor clad ghoul making his way North by a shallow section in the river nearby. As the ghoul neared, it too was accompanied by a sphere which floated about, issuing instructions to the nearby ghoul. Maghahn with her eagle-eyes, sized up and sniped the target, debilitating it in a single arrow strike. The brute ghoul made its way across during this action, and managed to dodge the trap Maghahn had set but was knocked flat by a headbutt from horned Hannya slowing his escape.

A brutal showdown commenced, between the surly risen soldier who was spewing insults, an irate and bloodied Hannya, and Maghahn who had tried to hide in the shadows. The ghoul struck out with his longsword at Maghahn, but she dodged gracefully, and assisted Hannya with getting a collar onto the ghoul – but the collar defected! its magical crystals sapped, bursting into harmless crackle-pop sounds and flashes of light. The ghoul wasted no time in putting up a fight, while Maghahn pomel-struck him with her shortsword. Hannya tried once more to grapple and subdue the ghoul with their remaining collar – successfully capturing him. This time its magic stayed true, and the ghoul became compliant. Hannya escorted the now subservient ghoul to the east, nearing the Heroes where the Seer was located, hoping for word from her about forces from Malazan. Maghahn took the time to forcefully locate more traps to place for the defense of her section of the North bank.

To the South, mobs had begun to approach from all across the farmland and wilderness, and Simone spotted one of the diabolical spheres. This one led a small risen child, who kept batting at it playfully, trying to catch it as it ushered him along. A nearby dog startled at this play and began barking – Simone lept into action and struck at the sphere, causing it to fly upwards out of reach. The mob nearby however took notice and began investigating the area, leaving Simone little chance to catch the undead child who fled North toward the river.

A mob from the East encroached near Murrdyn who attempted to incapacitate them with a spell of Sleep, but only half their numbers fell to it causing them to re-awaken their comrades and buying precious little time. Secutus made his way through the field to a vantage point nearby, while Torthen climbed upon the huts to the East of the field to assist Murrdyn in dealing with the eastern angry mob. While the Friar had made headway going North to the Heroes with his charge, it all seemed to be getting very hairy as another ghoul was spotted far to the west, with another mob close behind, and a sudden burst of noise from the North, signaling the diversion of the Tunnel Snake’s employers to keep the forces of Malazan occupied.
